Donna,

If you have ants in your compost pile, your compost's moisture content is
probably too low.  Probably 90% of all compost problems are tied to either
aeration or moisture.  
I'm in NC too and I know we've had a really wet spring, but everything I've
ever read says ants in compost means a need for moisture.
