Roundup - Safe or Not?

I've kept pretty much a completely organic garden for the last 15
years. The main plot is 30' x 50' and there are three island plots
that combined are about 2/3 of the main plot.

The paths were kept free of grass and weeds by laying down a thick
layer of newspapers and then layers of saltmarsh hay and straw
when saltmarsh hay was unobtainable. A couple of years ago the
straw I then got contained a particularly virulent grass that spreads
by underground runners and then shoots develop along the runners.
Now it continues to grow along the edges of the paths and spreads
into the beds, beds are raised but not edged with boards etc.

It's reached the point where I no longer have the energy or the time
to continue to fight the loosing battle of grubbing this stuff out. So ....
someone suggested Roundup. I read the back of the container in
the local garden shop and it seemed benign, maybe even
preferable to mothers milk.

My query to members of the group is, how safe is roundup in a mixed
vegetable and cut flower garden.

Regards,

Mark
