Re: Vinegar as Weedkiller/creating a lazy bed

I have never used enough vinegar to affect the soil ; I only tried to spray
it on the foliage of the grass or broadleaf weeds in surrounding area.......
They turn brown with sun exposure and seem to die. Some grasses will be
harder to clear because of their type of root system...... but if the area
can be dug soon after the foliage turns brown , and the roots sifted out,
perhaps it would work. I never sprayed in an area I was intending for a
garden bed.

This would be worth a test though, if anyone has a more sophisticated pH
tester.
I only have a pH test device with a probe that you stick in the soil.
After the holiday I will do a little test patch.

When I am creating a new bed or reviving an old one, I usually turn the
soil, grass, weeds and all, add a layer of compost or other amendments,
and then cover with recycled cardboard or several layers of newspaper, top
with pine needles or straw mulch, or grass clippings, and plant through it
by poking holes. I have a sufficient weed barrier, the soil moisture is
retained better, and by the time the paper/cardboard breaks down, the soil
under neath is pretty good, because the organic material I turned under has
broken down as well. The opening around each plant has to be large enough
to add dressings of compost.
