My hubby grew up on a farm and claims that the will continue growing and once planted you will never get rid of them (like a weed). If this is true I wouldn't worry so much about the shoots unless you want them to seed. In which case you definitely will have more than you need! I have never raised asparagus before so let me know how it goes. JessicaM
