Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
I don't have a lot of Sun Flower experience, but I do grow some every year.
I have planted them closer than one per square, but the ones I have now need
a little more space than that. The leaves get pretty big. If your seed
claims to be 'giant' or 'large' or some such, you might want to think about
staggering them diagonally, two per four squares.
As far as planting deeper, I have never tried it, but I have had plants fall
over and they seem to grow roots up the stem just fine, you can probably
plant them as deep as you like.
One thing I know for sure, Squirrels will eat them the very morning of the
day you plan to harvest them....
