Janet,
The CJD subject could stir up a Holy War in minutes. And its probably
off topic.
Careful on the ''Think a minute: if you were ordered by your
government to kill your entire herd, wouldn't you be trying desperately
to figure out where you could sell the meat and refuse parts to recover
at least a tiny fraction of your costs instead of taking a total loss?''
One of the big things that has caused a stir in Britain is the huge cost
of full compensation to the farmers for mass slaughter of, in the main,
infection free animals - still going on. The Federal States of Europe
take from Britain but do not want to give money back to aid the 'BSE
infected' farmers. Cost falls to the British Government. Big subject
for debate.
Where I live this BSE thing is a very emotive subject. Next door is a
farmer who (used to) breed bulls for a living. All grass fed. No BSE
but forced to give up due to give away low price and fear put around by
the media that it was only in Britain plus all across Britain. Poor
devil more or less went out of business.
And I heard about BSE in American herds several years before I heard
about it in Europe. This could easily be due to the secrecy in this
country and no freedom of information laws in GB.
BSE is a worldwide problem - dont kid yourself otherwise. Fortunately
it has by and large gone away with change of feed. Who in their right
mind would have fed herbivores - cows - ground up cow meat as a protein
feed? It did not only happen here. Something to ponder on - where was
the origin of the feed?
If you want a view, even if you dont want a view, I feel Britain should
reject all foreign meat products as they dont meet the most stringent
requirements in the world currently in place here.
Now lets all talk about growth hormones and their effect on the humane
race.
End of (my) Auto Rant.
Radishes are nearly there - another ten days or so. Lettuces not far
behind.
Regards
Brian
