I am a novice at this too, but I am jumping in with both feet...... I have gardened in the past, but always with acres of space. Now I am having to consolidate as I live in the city. This weekend was a big outdoor weekend..... we finished the raised beds, 6 of them, each 4 x 4, with fruit bushes at the end of the property (in the same area as the garden) and then some space for corn. I don't have the square foot gardening book because it's not available at my local bookstore here.... I didn't feel like ordering it and waiting, so..... I bought a couple of other books about companion planting and such. I sort of just started throwing all sorts of seeds and plants in the beds, hoping for the best! I also got an herb garden started, with some basil and oregano and chives and several others. I am wondering if anyone knows what i can plant in the herb garden to use the space since the herbs are so small this year? I wasn't sure if I could throw some carrots or other root vege in there to grow for the season. Bonnie, I would strongly suggest the herb garden because you can always take clippings with you if you move in the future. Also, there is a large section in one of the books i picked up about container gardening, which I hadn't thought would work well.... apparently, it does:) Does anyone grow things in those whiskey barrels? This book says that you can fit a bunch of things in one barrel, but I am still a doubting thomas. Oh, and another idea I saw in a book was to make a "theme garden" where you would plant everything you would need for italian dinners, like tomatoes, peppers, onions, basil and other herbs, and eggplant... oh, and some salad things i guess..... it seemed like you could fit quite a lot in a 4 x 4 garden! One more question, I have tomatoes and lettuce in one 4 x 4 bed right now, but I didn't know what else I could put in there? the lettuce is planted in between my tomatoes (I think there are 12 lettuce and 25 tomates) but I wasn't sure if some root crops or something could go in there? Thanks for the help, and i hope some of these things answer Bonnie's questions and get her going too!
