I have found the bonemeal discussion interesting but kind of worrisome. Somewhere I read, in what seemed to be a credible source, that bonemeal was safe to use if it was steamed. I checked my package (Frank's own brand) and in fact it did say it was steamed, so I've been using it in flower beds and layered in my compost pile. Don't ask me where I read it, I judged it legitimate and just filed it away in my mind! Have any of you run across this info, or on the other hand know it to be false?
Erica, unfortunately steaming does not raise the temp. enough to destroy prions. Prions can withstand temps up to
700 degrees F, which would not be achieved by industrial steaming.
Steaming takes care of other pathogens, but not the prions that cause "mad cow" disease.
