Re: Trellises

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Melissa,

I wondered if the image would get thru...we tried just using the nylon
trellis strings with pole beans the first year, and it just isn't strong
enough to support the weight. These panels, if you aren't familiar with
them, are constructed of galvanized steel rods about 3/8" thick and with
spacings of about 6" each way, which are welded in place giving a very
strong lightweight structure. I've used them as temporary gates or small
enclosures for cattle and hogs for years...In this application they add
rigidity and strength to the trellis, which is what I always had trouble
achieving any other way. The things aren't "pretty" but they work.

Actually, for our blackberries, I hung an entire panel rather than cutting
it in half and we weave the canes thru that. And dismantling in the fall is
no problem--remove the string, unwire the panel, and pull the posts out. The
hardest part is unwinding all that plant growth out of the trellis first. I
hope this helps clarify what I was trying to convey.
