I use a lot of beer in my slug traps and save the empty cans. I stake my eggplant
when I set them out and put an empty beer can upside down on each stake. The
bottom of beer cans is very smooth and keeps the stake from tearing the row
cover.

I understand that eggplant don't like to be crowded, so it seems to me that
holding the row cover away from the plant with the stake and beer can method
serves the secondary purpose of avoiding whatever 'crowding effect' the row cover
might otherwise cause.
