Sara asked about tomatoes in Zone 5:
I live in Springfield, IL, Zone 5b and set out my tomato transplants May 2.
One variety, Silvery Fir Tree, a Siberian heirloom with unusual ferny
foliage, has set 7 fruit within the last week. It will set at lower
temperatures and ripen its fruit at about 55 days after transplanting. I
always include this one for the first fresh homegrown tomato. One other
plant has set one fruit--another Russian heirloom, Black Krim. The Russians
do set at lower temperatures. The other plants--Texas Wild, Green Zebra,
Becky's Biggy, Mary Robinson, Oxheart and Schimmeig Stoo are all growing
like crazy. They have tripled in size in 23 days. I'm using tomato ladders
from Gardener's Supply this year for support, and the plants seems to be
fitting perfectly into the ladders as they grow taller. I set a Burpless
cucumber transplant at the back of each ladder, and they are climbing and
flowering, too.
