The mesh, as you called it, or cross-pieces are about 8 inches apart. Some
of my plants are already 3 feet tall and very heavy with foliage. They are
getting the support they need. Construction of the ladders is very heavy,
so the ladder sort of acts like an internal trellis to hold the main stem
and support side branches. I'm pleased. I wasn't pleased with Gardener's
Supply's potato barrels, however. They were a disaster, and I gave them
away. I ended up using cheap chicken wire to build potato barrels. The GS
ones kept blowing over in the wind and collapsing inward--even with gobs of
mulch inside.
