     Though I don't always use the square foot method I do use soaker hose. 
     I live in zone 9b in So. Calif. and watering is a real problem. I've 
     found in my sandy rocky soil that the soaker water doesn't reach more 
     than 6 inches to each side (but then I haven't dug down to see where 
     it soaks in to). I tried running a soaker hose around and through a 4 
     X 4 square foot plot I had planted, but it was a bust. I have larger 
     square foot plots (more like 16 X 16) that I run the soaker hoses up 
     and down and this seems to work just fine. I plant about 2 inches from 
     the hose and this even supplies huge tomato plants with enough water 
     to spread their roots quite wide. I think the drip method would not 
     work for me, as I would be too constrained from season to season as to 
     where and how far apart I need to plant each transplant.
     
     I think that how you run the hoses depends on your soil and 
     temperature. I know I couldn't supply a 2 X 8 bed with just one 
     length, so I double it up and back.

I'm thinking about installing a soaker or drip irrigation system in my garden. I
e got 8 2x8 beds, two fruit trees and the areas (ground cover) arround the trees
hat all need to be addressed. I've been looking into the soaker type irrigation 
cause it seemed to fit my square foot garden better than a drip system. I just w
ted to ask if any of you have done this. 
     
I've got some specific questions about the soaker hoses. Since my beds are 2x8 I
hould be able to run one hose down the center and water the entire bed. 
Literatruesays that the hose will water 12"-16" on either side. Is this true?
