Rest assured, you do not need to use raised beds. Any type of division is fine. However, there are many benefits of raised gardens for both the plants and planter.
1)Plants: They are able to have a controlled soil w/ minimal weeds as you provide it. Also if you're using regular soil to fill in, it gets sifted before use loosening it for growing roots.
2)Planter: Raised beds let one sit on them reducing bending and kneeling. This helps for any gardener suffering from arthritis and other chronic pains. Hope this helps and sorry it is so long. JessicaM
