Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
I have used SCRAP 2 X 4s for my 4' X 4' & 4' X 6' raised beds for three
years now and am very pleased!!
I lay them 4(3 1/2) inch flat on ground and build up by nailing on whatever
lengths are available, cutting the last piece to the length needed and
overlapping the layers alternating left hand/right hand at the corners. This
alternate overlap created a structural integrity and eliminates the need for
any corner posts.
Advantages: The mass of wood is greater, so provides longer life in rot
prone areas, but who cares, the scrap is free and is readily available in
short lengths (which fit in the trunk more easily,) the 3 1/2" horizontal
surface is far more knee and butt friendly, the beds can be raised in 1 1/2"
increments as time, soil and availability of scrap dictate.
I have more time available than budget and have really been pleased with
this system.
I don't recommend concrete building blocks as the reach to the center of a
4' (inside dimension) bed is greater than is comfortable for me (35-36"
shirt sleeve length.)
I hope this helps.
