I use "taste" as the major criterion.
Although we grew watermelons and pumpkins and winter squash,
they aren't worth the effort for us. Can't taste the
difference.
Tomatoes, always!
Corn is great, with enough room. Kandy corn is a dwarf variety and
very sweet.
Green beans worth it--pick small and sweeter than in stores.
Zucchini and Yellow sq. also good: small and better than stores.
I agree peppers aren't great, although jalapenos tend to be
hotter than comercial ones.
Grow what tastes best fresh, what you have space for, and what
you enjoy eating!
