Tristan, If you can't solarize the soil, because you lack sun's heat, the next best thing to do is grow a cover crop this winter. Get some clover, buckwheat, winter rye or even pea seeds and sow thickly. I mean, very thickly. What you want is a solid blanket of vegetation. Let it grow all winter and then dig it into the soil two or three weeks before you start planting. The microbal action in your soil will rev up, and healthy soil is your best defense against soil-borne pathogens such as blight and powdery mildew. Plus, you will be incorporating lots of nitrogen, potash and phosphorous into your soil. Doreen Howard
