Yes. You can substitute perlite for vermiculite too. In fact it makes up
about 1/3 of Mel's perfect soil mix. Now where to find it is the key. It's
rather expensive if you buy it at the mass marketers (Wal-Mart, etc.). Find
a bulk seed store, use the phone, they should have it or be able to get it.
I get 4 cuft bag of course vermiculite for about $13.00. I made two blocks
using perlite, can't tell any difference.
It's purpose is to hold moisture in the soil. Ever notice the little white
specs in the soil when you buy a plant? That's perlite.
