Hi Holly,
I read that about vermiculite also. I did not use it. I have been doing
Sq Ft Gardenings for 10yrs or so. I have nothing but sand in NW Fla. I
use as much compost as I can get my hands on &/or make. I believe that
does the same, and better because it has nutrients. With you just
starting, if you don't have a supply on compost, you might want to use some
vermiculite, it will be easier to get but cost of course. Concentrate on
getting you some compost or other organics (leaves, etc) to add to your
soil. I wouldn't bother holding off to get the black dirt that you have
mentioned. Sand is OK stuff if you add plenty of compost. Search for a
supply of organics, like a horse stable, etc. Good luck, Jim

I have finally begun reading the Square Foot book, and see that he strongly
recommends adding vermiculite. Do you all do that in real life too? Have
you found the benefits he speaks of?
