Re: Re: Cranberry Info Needed

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Okay everybody......I got my catalog out so I can tell you what I read about
them. The two varieties I have are LeMunyon and Stevens.....both of which are
supposed to be very prolific and planted commercially in Wisconsin, New
Jersey, Massachusetts and the Pacific Northwest. Info in the catalog says
(Raintree Nursery): You don't need a bog to grow cranberries. Just make a
well drained raised bed, 6-12 inches high, adding peat or sand. Cranverries
need an acid soil and need to be well watered. If temperatures dip below 10
degrees F, plants need a heavy mulch to protect next year fruiting wood Plant
one foot apart in rows two feet apart..(ahhh, forget that 'row' part!) These
varieties are very heavy producers of 1/2 inch red cranberries. The foliage
has a reddish cast and the small profuse flowers are tinged with reddish pink,
making this a beautiful, edible ground cover. Select both LeMunyon and
Stevens for pollination. Mine are definitely ground covers......and not
bushes at this point, and the prolific part remains to be seen! I saw a
commercial field of these varieties on TV at harvest time, and they did look
like bushes.....about 2 feet high from what I could tell.......and they were
covered with berries..........time will tell.......just hope I'm giving them
the right care. Thanks for the information.
Sandi
