Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Since I asked the question about cranberries, I've received so much info
that I've decided that cranberries belong in the SQ FT garden. First, they
don't need a bog or swamp. Any soil will do if it's amended with peat for
acidity. They like a pH of about 5.5. They are shallow-rooted and must be
mulched to retain moisture. Water often. Because they are a ground cover,
and one plant will cover a 3 X 3-foot area, I'm thinking that cranberries
belong in ornamental beds or in front of foundation plantings. I'm going to
pair mine with blueberry plants. Park Seed Co. will have cranberry plants
for sale in their 1999 catalog, and Indiana Berry Co. (800-295-2226 for free
catalog) has them for sale. I see cranberries as a natural extension of the
SQ FT philosophy. BTW, they need Winter cold to trigger flowering and berry
formation. So our southern friends probably won't get them to bear fruit.
Park lists the plant as Zones 2-8, but I think they are pushing it with Zone
8. More like 7a, I'd think. Just my thoughts on the berry of the season.
