Lettuce

Is there a trick to growing good, sweet lettuce?  Lettuce I grow in my sf
garden has a bitter flavor, not very strong, but enough that my wife will
purchase lettuce from the grocery store rather than using the home grown
stuff.  This is true regardless of the type of lettuce -- this year I tried
growing Romaine for the first time.  I just can't get an acceptable taste.

The garden is laid out in 4x4 raised beds.  The same bed that had the
lettuce also grew very good peas, carrots, and beets.  We're in zone 5 in
Albuquerque, about 5000 feet, and the summer temps average in the high 90s.
