I use a "speedling tray" which a local area organic farmer uses, as well as
regular small "six pack" type plastic trays (11"X22") with the little clear
plastic top. I use the "Sunshine" seed mix for planting medium, and
oftentimes start my seeds on top of the refrigerator, for about a week (the
warmth of the air coming from behind the refrigerator helps). Then the
planting trays get moved to the garage, where I have suspended a 4'
flourescent light over the trays, positioned 4-6" from the top of the trays.
I have taped aluminum foil to the sides of the flourescent light in order to
form a sort of "tent" which bathes the plants in light, and they do very
well. I spray the trays with a mist sprayer to keep them moist, and as soon
as the plants emerge, I use a VERY diluted fish emulsion in the sprayer to
help them along. I hope this helps, Richard

I wonder if you and others wouild be willing to share your success tips for
starting seeds? I'm the one who had such TRULY dismal and TRULY discouraging
experience with starting some fall seeds indoors a few weeks ago, and I sure
would like to get a grip on what I need to do / purchase ;/ build / whatever
to be able to do it right come mid-January or so for my area -- which isn't
that far away.
I have even considered getting a greenhouse -- but would that do well enough
without being heated (which I don't want to do) -- or could I use passive
solar (black water barrels) successfully? Would there be enough natural
light? S
So, fess up -- who out there grows good 'n healthy, stock little seedlings
indoors, and how exactly do you do it?
