You are very welcome Peg,
I just thought of another trick I use :o) I purchased row covers (from Gardeners supply co) and if you place them over your beds, I have raised beds, that prevents the white moths from laying their eggs on them in the first place.......then you won't have to use anything! It also will extend your harvest because it protects the plants down to 20 degrees or so. I had the worms on my cabbage because I had purchased the plants at a nursery, and didn't put Bt on them like I should have. I agree with your philosophy of not using chemicals......handpicking (with gloves) worked on my cabbage, it's now growing new beautiful leaves.....the big leaves have large holes in them, but it won't affect the finished product :o) Have fun gardening!

Fern,
Thank you for the information. I looked up BT (Bacillus thuringiensis), and you are right! It can be used on food crops, and it kills worms! What a wonderful thing. Do I sound naieve? I just have never used alot of pesticides in my garden. I have all of this long range oil...and other kinds of pest stuff..Diazinon, seven..etc......but I just choke when it comes time to spray. I have always just let things work themselves out in the past. Even to the point of pruning my rose bushes back when powder mildew occurs, rather than use a fungicide. Sorry if I offended the purists, but roses fit into my sq.. ft. gardening plan. I just hate using things that might get eaten by my family and myself...eventually.
I have always used the philosophy...if I can't grow it...It just doesn't belong here.
I am going to actually try this...I want to grow broccoli this year!!!!
Thanks,
Peg

I am growing broccoli for the first time in my garden.... The Broccoli is biting the dust. I have one plant that has been stripped of
all of its leaves. I did some research, and the answer was to put seven on
the plants.
The holes are in the middle of the leaves...until there isn't a middle
anymore...then the whole leaf is gone.
Peg,
Use Bt....what you have is cabbage worms (I think that's what there called ) and they love brassica plants.....I just handpicked about 10 of the green varmints off of my cabbage...unfortunately my broccoli seeds didn't germinate :( Anyway, Bt is natural.....only kills the worms, nothing else. Hope this helps, you can still salvage that broccoli! btw Bt works on tomato hornworms in the summer too :)
