Sorry to tell you that this is no longer true. Just this week there was a report in the newspaper about a new virus called Bubbleboy that can spread from only opening an email. I received a warning from Trend Micro US Virus Research Group. Although this is off-topic, since it is a concern to so many people I'll include an exerpt and a hyperlink to their site:

1. The first email worm - VBS_Bubbleboy
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
For many years people believed it was not possible to create an email virus or worm that would activate without any user intervention.
They were proven wrong. On November 9th, we received two email worms that
automatically activate and spread when an infected email message is opened (users do not have to click on an attachment).

VBS_Bubbleboy only works with Windows 95/98 and 2000. Due to a bug in the code, it fails to spread on Windows NT systems. VBS_Bubbleboy also requires Internet Explorer 5.0 and Microsoft Outlook (or Microsoft Outlook Express).  It does not work with any other email client (such as Pegasus Mail or Eudora).

While VBS/Bubbleboy is NOT in-the-wild and no Trend customers have reported
infections, so far. Trend advises customers to visit our website and find out how they can protect themselves from this new breed of malware.

Details about both variants of VBS_Bubbleboy are available on our website at:
