Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

There is a bit of a story that goes with this, so bear with me. I live on the
same street I grew up on. For the last 45 years (oops!) I have watched one of
my neighbors plant a vegetable garden in the back half of his very large back
yard. When I started my own gardens here, Swede was the neighborhood "guru".
The last three years I watched his health fail and his garden get smaller and
smaller. This last year he was not able to do a thing. Knowing it would soon
be weed ridden and dry, I worried about the effect this would have on his
spirit and general health. I complained out loud of not having enough space to
plant my vegetables and was quickly rewarded with "plant my place! The space
is yours". So boy did I!

One of the interesting developments was that in March Swede became anxious to
have the garden in (this is Central California, and although our last freeze
is around 3/15, that is still a bit too early, ) I was sure that if he died
before I got that garden in I would blame myself so I planted. I purchased
some Early Girl and Roma tomatoes and put them in. I stalled while the seeds I
was sprouting matured and took the time to work goodies into the soil. In
april it froze, unusual, but none the less it killed everyone's plants that I
knew. When I went over to check, Swede's plants were completely unfazed by the
frost. Now it could have been because they were planted about 30-35' away from
the bank of a full canal. Or it was just a sign that the garden was serving
good purpose and was supposed to be there. All over town tomatoes were flat on
the ground, black, mashed, dead......... I started planting seeds.

Continued................next post so that people who might be offended by my
storytelling can delete this (I hope the subject line worked)
