Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
I almost keeled over a couple days ago when I saw this tomato variety
listed in the index of the fall Seed Savers Exchange catalog:
Broad Ripple Yellow Currant
I grew up in the Broad Ripple neighborhood on the north side of
Indianapolis and graduated from BR High School (1 year ahead of David
Letterman and 2 in front of Marilyn Tucker Quayle...).
"Broad Ripple" is one of those funny phrases that sound really odd to
people from elsewhere but seem quite normal to locals who have heard it all
their lives. It refers to a bend in the White River, which runs through
Indy and just a couple blocks from BRHS. I knew right away that this must
be an Indianapolis tomato variety.
Sure enough, in the regular tomato listing there is an amazing description
of this yellow but not-true-currant cherry-type tomato. It was first found
"growing in a crack at 56th Street and College Avenue."
You guessed it--I grew up on a side street in the 5600 block of College, 3
*houses* east of College itself. This tomato must have been cropping
itself right under my nose.
A man whose name I don't recognize found and donated it to SSE in 1984. I
really feel I must grow BRYelCur in 2000 for old times' sake.
Anybody in the audience have experience with this unusual variety?
--Janet
