Re: New garden

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi Katherine,

Your new garden ideas sound really exciting! I'm sure that others may have
ideas on this one, but I thought I would put in a vote for doing the least
amount of work, and starting your gardens lasagna style/no till.
Basically, you put down a layer of newspaper 8-10 sheets thick, and cover
with a thick layer of mulch, at least four inches, but really as much as
you can come up with. Before the newspaper layer, trim everything down as
close to the ground as possible, and leave the debris in place, or put on
top of newspaper. If you do this now, it should have plenty of time to
cook over the winter, and hopefully kill off whatever is below. I haven't
dealt with ivy, so I'm not sure if that requires any special removal. You
might try letting your stump compost in place as well, by drilling several
holes and filling them with compost to speed the process. In the spring,
you can plant directly into pats of compost on the surface, and then add
mulch as you go through the season. Whether you till or no, I would say go
with the untreated wood. There's been quite a debate around in the past
few years, but there is a case for treated lumber leaching into your soil
and being generally dangerous in the garden. And redwood would look great!
I've built boxes with redwood when we lived in the San Francisco area and
was very pleased with the results. Hope it all goes well!
