Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Dear Katherine.
Rip out ALL the Ivy you can, it is the kind of stuff you give to your
enemy to grow in there garden. It is VERY invasive and will not stop
growing, covering your entire yard and house. I vote against using the
Roundup as I try to be as earth friendly as possible you will do just
fine pulling the Ivy by hand and keeping up on any new sprouts that will
pop up. In my garden I too had similar problems; roots, stumps, poor soil
and ground hard enough to land large aircraft on. After many attempts at
tilling in composted manure I gave up and went to raised beds. Mine are
made of Cinder blocks stacked two high with long wood stakes to hold in
place giving me a depth of 10 to 12 inches then filling only with the
composted (not fresh) manure. Cinder blocks are cheap only $ .95 at Home
Depot, easy to work with, not made of harsh chemicals, last forever, can
be moved or reused over and over and are great to sit on while working
(playing) in the garden. For the winter I have built a glass cold frame
of used windows to extend my growing season. I use (loosely) the Square
Foot gardening method, making my beds only four feet wide so I don't have
to walk on the soil. I am only a second year gardener, I have learned so
much just from the seed exchange it is a great forum to ask any kind of
gardening questions. I hope this helps your family.
