Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
I have been wanting to drop a line, but the list was so quiet ... I
thought I'd do a recap of my gardening season and perhaps get some tips
for next year.
My pole beans ... tasted great, but many of them never climbed. I tried
to help them, but only a few on each end of the row reached up and
climbed. I picked them often enough, but missed alot of those that
didn't climb, and they pretty much stopped producing. I wonder what I
did wrong, and why they didn't climb.
My beets did nothing! It seemed, though, that the outer leaves would
die, then the inner ones would grow a few inches but die when they got to
a certain height, like 3 inches ... finally they just withered, and one
day I looked for them and they were gone.
My cabbages were so full of holes, I gave up. They got to be about a
softball times 1.5 big. Whatever bugs got into them really had a feast.
Not much produce from the tomatoes, and they never got as tall as I
would've expected. We did get some lusious fruit though ... love those
garden fresh tomatoes.
Swiss chard did fine, but I didn't plant enough.
Peppers did the best of all my plants.
Cukes did fine, but again, not as fruitful as I would've expected.
My carrots did real well, whereas other years I got these tiny roots!
That was fun.
This is my second year, and while the above might not seem very
encouraging, it was much better than the previous year! I am learning so
much. I have never put anything into my soil, and now I am composting.
I am going to be pulling the plants this weekend (a frost killed what was
left), and putting some compost and manure in -- prepare it for next
year.
I look forward to planning my garden for next year in upstate NY's most
depressing month - February!
Deb
