Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hello All
Well Sept 24 we got snow - enough to cover everything and last through the
night. It melted the next day and that next night we got a severe frost
that finished off what the snow didn't get. I had covered my tomatoes
already and so far they have survived. I leave them covered during the day
so they can build up warmth to last the night. I just want a few more to
turn red. I used three varieties (Siletz, Oregon Spring, and Golden
something) all are from Territorial seed and bred for producing in the cool
summers of the maritime northwest. I have good success with them here in my
cool area. (Colorado, 7000 feet, zone 4)
But, the beans, zucchini, pumpkins, sweet peas, soy beans, and cucumbers
have been pulled out. The cukes did well throughout the year surprisingly
as it was a cool summer. I'd encourage folks to try soybeans if you
haven't. Mine worked well in the square foot setting. I had one per square
foot but a bit closer may have worked well also. And the steamed pods were
a treat! I picked them a bit earlier than I would have liked due to the
cold weather, but they were still good. Surprisingly, my husband complained
that we didn't have enough zucchini before the frost. Never heard that
before!
I've planted lettuce and spinach seedlings (grown from seed started in
mid-august) and garlic (pink polish variety, also from Territorial Seeds).
Both are covered but I intend to remove the cover from the garlic once they
get a good start. They should sit dormant in the ground and take off early
next spring. It's the first time I've tried winter lettuce and spinach and
I'm excited for the potential, aware of possible disaster. I bought Eliot
Coleman's book "Four-Season Harvest" and was encouraged to try it.
Well, I hope you all are enjoying the last remaining part of gardening
season. Happy Fall!
Ann
