Most sweet corn types will do okay at 1/sqft.  But with some
of the larger types, if you plant too close the blades
(leaves) may block the pollen from the silks.  We are also
seeing some problems this year where the pollen is spent
before the silks are receptive to it but this is a problem
due to the hot weather, not to sqft spacing.  We also
sometimes see problems where the plants at the upwind edges
of the corn patch don't receive enough pollen.  This might
be more noticeable in a 4x4 than in a larger block.  -Olin
