Update on drought

Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Thanks for the suggestions for surviving the drought. We had a good, long
rain last Friday and it helped the raised beds (lettuce, radishes, cabbage,
broccoli, collards, beets, snapdragons), but when I dug into the mulch
around trees, it was pretty dry underneath.

I did erect shade covers over some beds using short lengths of conduit and
some concrete reinforcing wire thingys that curve over and support that
floating row cover material. It made us feel better, and looked like the
plants benefitted. Parents are sending gallons of store-bought water, we
got 4 big bags of ice left from the fall festival, and I learned how to
direct the water from the washing machine into 6 gallon plastic containers
from Wal-Mart. At 48 pounds each when full, they are a handful, but it is
helping. No rain in the forcast for at least another week. Just sun, wind,
and cool temperatures.
