I do SqFt for about the same reasons, not that I have any one reason
that I settled on that I think will cause 'lean times', just that I like
to make sure. For the same reasons that I keep a pocket knife in my
jeans (in case I need it), some cash on hand (in case I need it) and
have a supply of dry food (in case I need it) etc., I grow a garden, and
am learning to use all the food from it that I can.
I chose SqFt after testing it for density. I assume that organic
material will always be availiable, so my concern was surface area of
prepared ground. I was very happy with the results of my test.
I also have some seed concerns. Not only do I need open pollinated
plants, but I need them with special climate tolerances (Florida). I
have found some plants that will grow season after season without
tending (New Zealand Spinach for a good example) and am setting in odd
plants in decorative settings (Pinapple for borders, blueberry for
hedges). And am looking at some Native Species of fruit and vegetables.
On an off topic note, I am in the planning stage of a tilapia pond that
I will use to enrich my water before it goes to my garden.
I am not very dedicated to the whole thing, but knock away at it... in
case I need it. I would love to hear your plans.
