I wanted wildlife, but....

I live in a suburban area and generally we don't have to worry about
garden-destructive wildlife like rabbits, raccoons, and deer. We have lots of
squirrels, birds, lizards, frogs and toads and the occasional snake...but just
last week I noticed that I have a family of rats living under my deck. I
wouldn't mind them except they're pretty bold and I keep running across them
(like when I take the top off the composter) and they seem to be hoarding the
bird food. I know they're going to discover the SQFT garden in pretty short
order. We don't have a cat (my husband doesn't like them) and I don't know the
Pied Piper's tune. I think I may have to resort to poison--placed under the
 deck
where it's likely they'll eat it. Does anyone have a better suggestion?
