Re: I wanted wildlife, but....

I commiserate with you Jane. It's the deck that's the problem. We had one
too, and rats moved in and colonized. After a year or so of this, they even
were crawling up the window screens at night. We tried poisons and baits,
to no avail. They were eating all the seedlings I was starting flats on the
deck at night, and then advanced to the garden. It was awful. We even got
a fogger and fogged some horrible stuff under the deck. One or two rats
would die, but more came to replace them. You and I live in a hot, humid
climate where critters like that thrive. They are the survivors, and we are
the newcomers. Our final solution was expensive, but worth it. We pulled
out the deck last Feb. and laid a flagstone patio in its place. Haven't
have a rat since!!! Of course, when my husband yanked away the last of the
planking, rats ran out in every directions. Some were huge. One charged,
and my husband shot him with snake shot. It was horrible! BTW, if you have
rats under the deck, you also have mice and millions of roaches, I
guarantee. An entomologist told me that roaches colonize with rodents.
Happy thought, isn't it!
Good luck in your battle.
