Dear amy,
try to use "raise bed" (like a sand box, you can make it from wood or plastic),
or you can try "vertical gardening" (I prefered to call it verticulture),
you can find references from      http://home.swbell.net/shep1/garden.htm,
so you don't have to dig out every rock in your yard.
