In zone 4, you'd want to buy transplants because tomatoes take a long time
to mature. Tomatoes cannot tolerate cold weather, so they cannot go outside
until June. If you plant seeds that late, you won't be getting ripe tomatoes
until late September.
In order to get a long harvest season in your area, tomato seeds must be
started indoors, in April or so. Indoor growing is a challenge because it is
difficult to get enough light, even from a sunny window. It is *far* easier
to just buy transplants from a nursery. The advantage of starting your own
seeds is that there are far more varieties available--nearly 300 in at least
one catalog.
