Re: Melissa's question.

Melissa,

Could you have been referring to my letter to someone that was then forwarded
to the listserve? I plant onion bulbs, leeks that I started from seed
indoors, etc, in August. I cover the whole thing with at least eight inches
of straw mulch. I've tried with less mulch and got tasty veggies, but much
smaller. I get the straw from the gardening store during summertime. It costs
$8 a bale in Vermont and a bale goes a long, long way. They are twice the
size of hay bales. Eight inches of mulch eventually packs down to four
inches. Then with some snow on top during the winter, it is just like
springtime under the mulch.

I've pulled back mulch in February just to see what I'd see. The ground was
soft as could be. I have wintered my potatoes and carrots too. I couldn't
have done this as easily when I lived in Minnesota because we either had 16
feet of snow over the garden or no snow at all. It's easier in Vermont. The
winter gardening spirits are very kind.

Lorrie
