Little Buggies

I could use some of your more practised expertise on this one...
my chard and perpetual spinach (same family here, i haven't checked my
beets themselves) are infested (really infested!) with little black, flat,
almost heart-shaped bugs which hide in the crevices and undersides of these
leaves. i've tried to pull out the infested plants, but these guys made a
huge comeback. the chard has some brown-patches on the leaves too, which i
can't tell if it's due to age or to these bugs. the bugs aren't very
active at all, barely respond when touched. and a curious aside is that
there are always one or two ants under there with them. so, except for the
description, they sound like and behave like aphids, but they're black and
flat!!

any ideas? i've looked through some of the basic books and haven't found a
match.
