Thank you for requesting a clarification. I plant the onion bulbs or sets,
and anything else, such as leeks, outside in August. Leeks can take a while
to germinate and they like cool weather. I grow them in my basement under
grow lights. I grow onions by seed in the spring, but for fall/winter
plantings I use onion bulbs mostly. They are very hardy. I realize this is
not necessarily an efficient plan, but I enjoy it so much. It isn't much work
really. And it is so much fun to uncover the mulch in springtime and find a
ready garden of at least a few veggies smiling at me from one of my square
foot squares.
