Ted, I have always used 4 X 8 or 4 X 16 foot beds because of space restrictions, and I've never had a problem with reaching across them. I'm 5'8" tall and my arms make the reach nicely. If I were shorter, it might be a problem. My newest beds are 4 X 28 feet and are very space efficient. I grow so many heirloom tomatoes, herbs and strawberries in them that I have enough to donate to the local food pantry and sell to gourmet restaurants in Houston, including Cafe Annie. So the longer the bed, the more room you have for commercial production. I built my current beds out of concrete blocks--each has two holes in it. I filled the holes with good soil and grow my strawberries in them. They drain well, hold the berries up off the soil, and the concrete gathers heat, allowing earlier growth and berry production. Herbs love the holes, too. Hope this helps.
