Re: Advice on setting up first square foot garden

Hi Jo Anne ..
First, let s see if I have your layout correct in my mind.
As you go up hill on a driveway heading north (+ -) toward your house,
you come
to an area that has been sort of leveled for the house. At this point
there is an strip about
9 wide which runs at a right angle to the drive about 50 to your
property line. Right?
This makes the 50 sides run east/west and the 9 sides north/south. On
the north side of
this strip is a swale and the south (downhill) side is lower than the
north side. Also, it
would be difficult to access the strip from the long sides ... only from
the 9 foot side by
the drive.
Is that close to correct? I m trying to spell it out not only for my
benefit but so
others may get a better picture and contribute ideas, so please correct
me if I m mistaken
in the layout
My garden has, among other beds, five beds 4X20 feet. That was fine
many years
ago when I was younger and more nimble. Now I would be happier if they
were only 3
feet wide. So my advice would be to make your beds 3X50 with a 3 foot
path between
them. As you gain experience you can decide how to break up the 50 foot
lengths to suit
yourself.
Also, I suggest that you start a notebook and keep track of what you
planted and
where you planted it so that you can rotate your crops from year to
year.
Hope that helps...... good luck ... Ed Flynn
