I thank all of you for your advice. You are very kind. Since I am not
sure of this type of communication, please let me know if I am taking up
too much time on the listserver.
Ed has summed up my garden area perfectly. I live on a meadow with no
real leaves available although I have planted some trees and hope to
eventually have some leaves. Grass is not available to me because the slope
is too steep for us to mow and when it is done by someone else, it is left.
However, I do garden for perennials. I have three very large areas further
up on the slope (far from the house). Do you think I could cut these down and
pile them up on the veg garden area. I have been reluctant to do this
because I worry about disease. I also had my husband go fishing and bring
back the bad fish for me to bury. There wasn't a lot though, and they don't
seem to be biting any more. Too cold he says. It has already snowed here.
Right now, the ground is bare but cold and wet. I probably should also
mention that I live in the country on 28 acres, but they are very difficulty
acres all on a very tiring slope.
Manure is available by the truck for a steep price. There is also the
problem that trucks do not like to deliver to my house because of the slope.
Once, our utilities company delivered some free mulch at my request. They
left it in a spot that it is practically impossible to transport to garden
areas. i.e. at the very bottom of the hill.
I was a little disappointed in the amount of squares. I don't mind
waiting to build up squares especially if it would make a difference.
But, I get the feeling that I will never be able to grow them all. I
also forgot to add potatoes to my list. I only wanted a tiny bit of garlic
and celery. I don't care about the stalks, but only the leaves which
can be dried and used in flavoring soups, stews, dressing etc, and is
expensive to buy. I really want some corn. Just a little. We all love it.
You never know how it will be when you buy it. But if not, I guess we
need to accept that. Would any of my vegetables grow well enough in
containers to feed us? I was thinking of trying to grow the potatoes in
cardboard boxes. Thanks again for your help.
