But, I get the feeling that I will never be able to grow them all. I
also forgot to add potatoes to my list. I only wanted a tiny bit of garlic
and celery. I don't care about the stalks, but only the leaves which
can be dried and used in flavoring soups, stews, dressing etc, and is
expensive to buy. I really want some corn. Just a little. We all love it.
You never know how it will be when you buy it. But if not, I guess we
need to accept that. Would any of my vegetables grow well enough in
containers to feed us? I was thinking of trying to grow the potatoes in
cardboard boxes. Thanks again for your help.<
I say try whatever crops you like, but the cautions about taking on too much at once is very good advice. I find that garlic and is an easy low maintenance crop hat can fit in anywhere with good sun and not a lot of wetness in the summer. I grew French dinant celery from seed this year and it's thin strongly flavored stalks were perfect for flavoring various dishes, as a matter of fact it's still going strong in my zone 8 garden. I also grew corn despite only having 200 square feet of total veggie garden space (pics at http://www.teleport.com/~scut/garden.htm).From about 16 plants, I got enough for several corn feasts for two (about 24 ears) and I got some fine material for my compost bin out of the deal too. Those delicious ears I grew were worth every bit of space (about 15 square feet or one square if you use the 4 x 4 beds - I don't). Use the following cold months to keep planning and learning and comparing advice and book/web facts. Then you can determine next year what specifics apply to your situation. Good luck and have fun experimenting.
