We're dismantling our non-square-foot garden from this summer and
getting ready to prepare the soil and lay out the garden for a sqft.
experiment in the spring.  I've pulled the pepper and basil plants, but
am at a loss for what to do with them.  They've got woody and/or very
tough stems plus lots of leaves.  Should I chop them up and add the
pieces to the compost pile?
