Holly,
Sounds like you have a "raised" bed to me, you have cinder blocks filled with
rich loam that is higher than the ground, you have raised the planting
surface. A convenience you will appreciate as you get older, not so much
bending over as you enjoy your square foot garden. The idea of square foot
gardening in 4 X 4 blocks is you never step on your growing soil, no more
shoveling or turning over hard soil and you can reach inside all of the blocks
by walking around the block. I made my square foot garden out of 2 X 10
lumber. I made 2 X2's 4 X 4's and 4 X 8's.
Do you put a layer of cinder block or something under the garden, and does
your frame have a bottom?>>
No, I dug down one shovel full, sifted the dirt, and then filled the block
with Mel's perfect soil mix. However for those getting on in years or for
those that have a disability, a raised bed can be constructed out of cheap
lumber, say 1 X 6, a plywood bottom attached, holes drilled for drainage and
the 4 X 4 frame or 3 X 3 frame or what ever size frame and be put on an old
kitchen table in a sunny spot and you can garden standing up or garden in a
wheel chair. Square foot gardens are neat, aren't they!!!!
