Cold Climate Salad Greens

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

A gardening question: I'm new to Zone 5 where the winter temps dip to -20
degrees. I've heard that it's possible to sow lettuce and spinach seeds in
early Winter, before the ground freezes totally, and have them them sprout
in early March to produce a very early salad crop. Does anyone do this or
have any info on technique, timing, etc.
