Kale can be grown through winter itself with little protection from the
wind. I believe Vermont gardener Dick Raymond does this, and his
climate is far colder than my former zone 6. Unfortunately, you would
have had to start the kale in late summer. As you no doubt know, the
nurseries don't sell vegetable seedlings at this time of year. Maybe
next year you can try it.
