===================
Time-Life Virtual Garden has a USDA Plant Hardiness Zone locator and map at
http://www.pathfinder.com/vg/timelife/zonefinder/locatezone.html. The USDA
zones are based on minimum temperatures and are widely used in plant and
seed catalogs to indicate the plant's adaptability to a particular area of
the United States. In many cases, urban and suburban gardens are sheltered
and the minimum temperatures may vary somewhat from those in orchards and
open fields.

An August 1998 post to the usml sqft list described the AHS (American
Horticultural Society) Heat-Zones. The post is archived at
http://www.mallorn.com/lists/sqft/aug98/msg00125.html. The AHS Heat-Zones
address plant tolerance to heat. The ratings seem to be pretty well-know in
the east as in the Carolinas but are not widely used elsewhere. I was
pretty interested in the ratings because our summer temperatures are often
110+ deg. F. The AHS plant encyclopedia with the Heat-Zone ratings may be
useful for most areas but not very helpful to us in the low desert.

Back in the 1950s, Lane Publishing Co. developed climate zones ("Sunset"
zones), initially for California, but later extended to 24 zones that
covered the USA west of the Continental Divide. Recently there was a plant
to add the rest of the US but I don't know if it ever happened. The USDA
and AHS zones are sensitive to temperature only and do not include other
relevant factors such as humidity, pH, temperature, exposure, wind,
elevation, coastal-desert-mountain influences, etc. There is a brief
description at
http://www.pathfinder.com/vg/timelife/zonefinder/sunset.html but for actual
zone information, I believe you need to buy their plant encyclopedia.

Some time ago, we were asked to provide zone locations to provide
perspective to subscribers in other areas. Maybe it's more confusing than
enlightening...?
